About WBC 2027

A global meeting point for bamboo

The World Bamboo Congress (WBC) is the leading international gathering for everyone working with bamboo — from the forest and the laboratory to food, products and buildings. Initiated by the World Bamboo Organization (WBO), it brings together scientists, cultivators, foresters, food and nutrition experts, manufacturers, engineers, architects, designers and policymakers to share knowledge and build lasting collaborations.

The 13th edition is significant for two reasons: it is the first World Bamboo Congress hosted in the Netherlands, and it marks the congress’s return to Europe. Rotterdam — a city defined by contemporary architecture, circular ambition and international exchange — is a fitting setting for a congress that connects research, industry, business and agriculture under one roof. Topics range from cultivation to fabrication, from design to engineering, from economy to policy, from biology to nutrition, and much more.

Across five days at Theater Zuidplein, the WBC 2027 will host scientific presentations, professional sessions, workshops, the European Bamboo Expo and public programming — details of which are being finalised and will be announced through the programme page and the WBC 2027 newsletter.

Three reasons to join

01

First World Bamboo Congress in the Netherlands

The WBC 2027 is the first time the congress has been hosted in the Netherlands, placing Dutch expertise in agriculture, water and the circular economy alongside the global bamboo community.

02

A global congress, hosted in Rotterdam

After editions held around the world, the 13th World Bamboo Congress comes to Rotterdam, bringing the international bamboo community together in one of the world’s most connected cities.

03

A multi-platform ecosystem with other opportunities

Research, industry, design and cultivation rarely share a single programme. The WBC 2027 is built as one connected platform across all four, from lab to field, from forest to factory.

Congress ecosystem

One congress, many voices

The WBC 2027 brings many voices together in Rotterdam.

Alongside the World Bamboo Congress, the week will include partner events, exhibitions, workshops, scientific sessions and opportunities to connect across disciplines.

The setting

Rotterdam: design-driven and forward-looking

Rotterdam is an internationally connected city known for its striking architecture, circular ambition, a culture of design and innovation, and Europe’s largest port — a fitting setting for a congress that connects research, industry, business and agriculture under one roof. Topics range from cultivation to fabrication, from design to engineering, from economy to policy, from biology to nutrition, and much more.

The Netherlands

Come for the congress,
stay for the Netherlands

There really are windmills, tulip fields in spring (April and May, so just before the congress) and more bicycles than people. There is also a country you can cross by train in about three hours, where almost everyone speaks English, where the whole coast is an hour or less from Rotterdam, and where the food, farming and building sectors are among the most experimental in Europe. Many delegates travel a long way to reach us. If that is you, consider staying a few days either side: the rest of the Netherlands is very close, and June is one of the best months to see it.

Ideas for a few extra days

  • Kinderdijk — nineteen windmills in a row, half an hour from Rotterdam.
  • Delft and The Hague — canals, Vermeer and the North Sea beach, both under half an hour by train.
  • Amsterdam — about 40 minutes away, museums and canal belt included.
  • Utrecht — wharf cellars along the water, 35 minutes.
  • Biesbosch National Park — one of Europe’s few freshwater tidal wetlands, best seen by canoe.

Getting there

How to get there

Theater Zuidplein sits directly next to one of Rotterdam’s main public transport hubs, so the venue is straightforward to reach from Rotterdam Central Station and from Schiphol Amsterdam Airport (AMS).
